Bruce J Spittle, MB ChB with distinction, and DPM (Otago), who authored this remarkable little book appropriately titled Fluoride Poisoning (and subtitled: Is fluoride in your drinking water—and from other sources—making you sick?), is a longtime resident of Dunedin, New Zealand.

 He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, recipient of many prizes and awards, a former Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Otago, Dunedin, NZ, and Consultant Psychiatrist for the Otago District Health Board, 1978-2004. Readers of Fluoride know Dr Spittle mainly as co-editor (1994-98), now managing editor (since 1999) of Fluoride.

He has published several articles and editorials on the health effects of fluoride and was a peer reviewer for the University of York’s recent systematic review of public water fluoridation.1 The idea of writing a book on Fluoride Poisoning occurred to him at the 27th conference of the International Society for Fluoride Research at Beijing, China, 9-12 October 2007. For Dr Spittle to complete and publish this carefully documented book by December 2007 reveals how extraordinarily familiar he is with the literature on the health effects of fluoride.

Is It Legal?

Is it legal? No doctor in Australia may prescribe medication without his patient's consent. How then can it be legal for any health professional to prescribe medication for persons he has not met, whose past medical histories are not known, whose current medical needs are not known, where the dose that each individual will take in is not known, when it is not known whether the medication will react with other medications being taken, or even whether those people need the medication at all.

Fluoridation encroaches on a person's sovereignty over his body and the selfsame principle that seeks to justify fluoridation would also justify adding tranquillisers, vitamins, antibiotics, contraceptives, laxatives or anything else to the water supply.  Early Uses of Fluoridation

  USAF Major George R. Jordan testified before Un-American Activity committees of Congress in the 1950's that in his post as U.S.-Soviet liaison officer, the Soviets openly admitted to "Using the fluoride in the water supplies in their concentration camps, to make the prisoners stupid, docile, and subservient."
 

 The first occurrence of fluoridated drinking water on Earth was found in Germany's Nazi prison camps. The Gestapo had little concern about fluoride's supposed effect on children's teeth; their alleged reason for mass-medicating water with sodium fluoride supplied by I G Farben, was to sterilize humans and force the people in their concentration camps into calm submission.

Belgium banned fluoride supplements because excessive use of fluoride increases the risk of osteoporosis, could damage the nervous system and, even Belgian dentists agree, is ineffective when ingested.

"Belgian health minister at the time Magda Aelvoet said she was now pressing for a Europe-wide ban, hinting that the removal of supplements was just the first step towards removing the chemical from the food chain," according to the article. Belgium's ban is a result of a report by the health ministry's advisory body. The health ministry plans to present the review to the European Commission this month in a bid to make Europe follow its lead, the article says.

According to Nutraingredients.com: "'We think we have very strong arguments for the ban,' responded the ministry spokesman. 'And it is rather uncertain when the list of supplements (the Directive) will come in. We have asked the council of health to prepare a review of the existing scientific evidence to be presented to the European Commission so we are presenting them with a solid scientific basis for the ban to be brought into Europe...,' said Belgium's spokesman."

According to Nutraingredients.com: "'We base our opposition to fluoride on the fact that there is no positive impact from the supplements - brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste is sufficient and there is no reason to do anything else. Fluoride should be applied topically to prevent caries, but should not be swallowed, especially by children who are more vulnerable to it. Although there is natural fluoride in tea and water, for example, we think that there are significant differences between the natural chemical and the synthetic fluoride used in dental products. And we have looked at a general review of the total literature, rather than a single study - we all know studies can sometimes be biased,' responded the health ministry spokesman,"

TRIBUTE TO JOHN YIAMOUYIANNIS (1943-2000) Translation from the Japanese Journal of Fluoride Research, No. 19, Nov. 2000, p. 1, excerpts... Dr John Yiamouyiannis, biochemist and founder of the Safe Water Foundation, USA, died October 8, 2000, passing away peacefully in sleep at his home in Delaware, Ohio, surrounded by members of his family.

Undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and afterward, in 1967; PhD in biochemistry at the University of Rhode Island. Postdoctoral research at Western Reserve Medical School; became a biochemical editor at Chemical Abstracts Service. There, he became aware of the health-damaging effects of fluoride.

His opposing water fluoridation prompted efforts by the National Institute of Dental Research to have CAS silence him or risk losing substantial US Public Health Service funding. He resign from the CAS. His experience is described in his book, Fluoride the Aging Factor. Dr Y’s studies with Dr Dean Burk to determine whether cancer death rates increased after fluoridation in the 1950s caused great concern among many Americans and prompted Congressional hearings in 1977 followed by a 21-day court trial in Pennsylvania.

There the presiding judge was compellingly convinced of the adverse effects of fluoridation and ordered its halt as a public health hazard. His decision, however, was overruled on jurisdictional grounds, and at an administrative level fluoridation policy remained unchanged. Young Teeth in Trouble

 A RECORD number of NSW children and babies are having rotten teeth pulled out.

Experts say parents should stop feeding children between meals and start brushing their teeth earlier ------ or risk a lifetime of dental problems.

Latest NSW Health figures show 1590 children aged 14 and under had teeth extracted in 2006/07.

Another 1367 had teeth restoration and 1944 children had both restoration and removal.

The rate of babies, toddlers and children aged four and under needing hospitalisation for teeth removal has doubled since 1990.

“In this age group early feeding patterns and prolonged daily use of nursing bottles contribute to dental caries,” the newly released NSW Health Oral Health Data Book says.

Parents are being advised to restrict baby bottles and sippy cups to water outside meal times and at night to avoid early childhood caries (ECC). 

Even milk, formula and juice are not recommended between meals once baby teeth appear.

“ECC is a serious dental condition during the pre-school years of a child’s life when developing baby teeth are especially vulnerable,” a spokesman for NSW Health said.

“It can be a devastating condition often requiring a visit to hospital with general anaesthesia for treatment.

NSW Health says parents should ensure their children’s teeth are brushed as soon as baby teeth appear.

This remarkable article based on NSW Health Department info showing serious deterioration in children’s teeth amounts to an admission that its policy of water fluoridation has utterly failed.

The disturbing and confusing aspect of this article is the attempt to place the blame on parents for this deterioration in children’s teeth. 

No mention at all of the most effective way to prevent tooth decay by drastically reducing consumption of refined sugar, which is a major ingredient in virtually all processed food and drinks.

Researchers estimate that on average each Australian unknowingly consumes up to 1kilo of refined sugar per week. Not only is this fact destroying children’s teeth but is a major cause in increasing cases of diabetes, and other major health problems!

Position

In July 2005, Mr Robertson was appointed Minister for Health where he is currently overseeing the implementation of the $10b – 5 Year Health Action Plan. This represents the largest ever injection of new funding into Queensland’s public health system combined with an extensive organisational and service delivery reform program. In 2007, Mr Robertson was elected Chair of the Australian Health Ministerial Council.

 It appears that the Minister of Health has NO experience or qualifications in the field of Health and therefore has no understanding or knowledge of Health, yet he professes to DICTATE to the People of Queensland, what is good for their Health, that being unprescribed Mass Medication. In other words, a Dose of RAT POISON.

Anna Bligh, Premier of Queensland State, Australia, has just let slip the real power behind the worldwide fluoridation hoax. In an astonishingly brazen admission she revealed that her Government is consulting chemical companies about adding pharmaceutical products to public tap water supplies, imposing what she euphemistically calls 'tap water therapy' on the Australian public.

'My job is to work with the chemical companies, to deliver medications, whether people like it or not', Bligh is reported to have told astonished listeners. 'We know most people are lazy, they are uneducated, and they are a burden on the hospital system, so we believe we have a mandate to protect them by whatever means we have at our disposal.’

Permitting State-mandated fluoridation has opened a hideous Pandora's Box, and created a potentially lethal precedent that obliterates the defences against rampant Fascism; it allows almost unlimited new medical assaults on the public, and untold risks to the environment.
There can only be one response to such a revolting policy - Bligh must be impeached and sacked immediately, and the fluoridation of Australia's public water supplies subject to the type of critical scientific scrutiny that Bligh appears to hold in such utter contempt.

"In humans, effects on thyroid function were associated with fluoride exposures of 0.05-0.13 mg/kg/day when iodine intake was adequate and 0.01-0.03 mg/kg/day when iodine intake was inadequate." p218

"The recent decline in iodine intake in the United States (CDC 2002d; Larsen et al. 2002) could contribute to increased toxicity of fluoride for some individuals." p218

"Intake of nutrients such as calcium and iodine often is not reported in studies of fluoride effects. The effects of fluoride on thyroid function, for instance, might depend on whether iodine intake is low, adequate, or high, or whether dietary selenium is adequate." p222

This means that for 30 years the powers that be have known that levels this low 0.01 ppm damages the thyroid!

Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield wrote to me recently to share his thoughts regarding the fluoride issue. He agreed to share his thoughts with my readers here at the site. "As you know, Thyroid UK had a Thyroid Awareness Week last week and apart from the first and successful conference, we handed in a petition to the Prime Minister, Mr Blair, at 10 Downing St, protesting against his proposed nationwide fluoridation of our water supplies, in view of especial damage to thyroid sufferers. We are however pretty sure that it ended up in the very large waste bin in the fine and ornate entrance hall.

I don't believe that thyroid sufferers are sufficiently aware of the dangers of fluoride intake and I thought it might be helpful to expand on this issue.

It is an enzyme poison. Enzymes are complex protein compounds that vastly speed up biological chemical reactions while themselves remaining unchanged. As you read this, there is occurring in all of us a vast multitude of these reactions to maintain life and produce the energy to sustain it. The chains of amino acids that make up these complex proteins are linked by simple compounds called amides; and it is with these that fluorine molecules react, splitting and distorting them, thus damaging the enzymes and their activity. Let it be said at once, this effect can occur at extraordinary low concentrations; even lower than the one part per million, which is the dilution proposed for fluoridation in our water supply.

Moreover, fluorides are cumulative and build-up steadily with ingestion of fluoride from all sources, which include not just water but the air we breathe and the food we eat. The use of fluoride toothpaste in dental hygiene and the coating of teeth are further sources of substantial levels of fluoride intake. The body can only eliminate half of the total intake, which means that the older you are the more fluoride will have accumulated in your body. Inevitably this means the ageing population is particularly targeted. And even worse for the very young there is a major element of risk in baby formula made with fluoridated water and the extreme sensitivity of the very young to fluoride toxicity makes this unacceptable. Since there are so many sources of fluoride in our everyday living, it will prove impossible to maintain an average level of 1ppm as is suggested.

What is the result of these toxic effects?

First the immune system. The distortion of protein structure causes the immune proteins to fail to recognise body proteins, and so instigate an attack on them, which is Autoimmune Disease. Autoimmune diseases constitute a body of disease processes troubling many thousands of people: R/A, SLE, Asthma, Systemic Sclerosis are examples; but in my particular context today, thyroid antibodies will be produced which will cause Thyroiditis resulting in the common hypothyroid disease, Hashimoto's Disease and the hyperthyroidism of Graves' Disease.

Musculoskeletal damage results further from the enzyme toxic effect; the collagen tissue of which muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones are made, is damaged. Rheumatoid illness, osteoporosis and deformation of bones inevitably follow. This toxic effect extends to the ameloblasts making tooth enamel, which is consequently weakened and then made brittle; and its visible appearance is of course dental fluorosis.

The enzyme poison effect extends to our genes; DNA cannot repair itself, and chromosomes are damaged. Work at the University of Missouri showed genital damage, targeting ovaries and testes. Also affected is inter uterine growth and development of the foetus, especially the nervous system. And increased incidence of Down's Syndrome has been documented.

Fluorides are mutagenic. That is, they can cause the uncontrolled proliferation of cells we call cancer. This applies to cancer anywhere in the body; but bones are particularly picked out. The incidence of osteosarcoma in a study reporting in 1991 showed an unbelievable 50% increase. A report in 1955 in the New England Journal of Medicine showed a 400% increase in cancer of the thyroid in San Francisco during the period their water was fluoridated.

What concerns me so deeply is that in concentrations as low as 1ppm, fluorides damage the thyroid system on 4 levels.

1. The enzyme manufacture of thyroid hormones within the thyroid gland itself. The process by which iodine is attached to the amino acid tyrosine and converted to the two significant thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3), is slowed.

   
   2. The stimulation of certain of the G proteins whose function is to govern uptake of substances into each of the cells of the body, from the toxic effect of fluoride, has the effect of switching off the uptake into the cell of the active thyroid hormone.
   
   3. The thyroid control mechanism is compromised. The thyroid stimulating hormone output from the pituitary gland is inhibited by fluoride, thus reducing thyroid output of thyroid hormones.

   
   4. Fluoride competes for the receptor sites on the thyroid gland which respond to the thyroid stimulating hormone; so that less of this hormone reaches the thyroid gland and so less thyroid hormone is manufactured.

   
   These damaging effects, all of which occur with small concentrations of fluoride, have obvious and easily identifiable effects on thyroid status. The running down of thyroid hormone means a slow slide into hypothyroidism. Already the incidence of hypothyroidism is increasing as a result of other environmental toxins and pollution together with wide spread nutritional deficiencies.

   
   One further factor should occasion us deep anxiety. Professor Hume of Dundee, Scotland, in his paper given earlier this year to the Novartis Foundation, pointed out that iodine deficiency was growing worldwide. 141 million Europeans are at risk; only 5 European countries are iodine sufficient. The UK now falls into the marginal and focal category. (I do not know what the statistics are for the USA.) He recently produced figures to show that 40% of pregnant women in the Tayside region of Scotland were deficient by at least half of the iodine required for a normal pregnancy. A relatively high level of missing, decayed, filled teeth was noted in this non-fluoridated area, suggesting that the iodine deficiency was causing early hypothyroidism which interferes with the health of teeth. Dare one speculate on the result of now fluoridating the water?

   
   These figures would be worrying enough, since they mean that iodine deficiency, which results in hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone cannot be manufactured without iodine) is likely to affect huge numbers of people. What makes it infinitely worse, is that fluorine, being a halogen, chemically related to iodine but very much more active, displaces iodine. So that the uptake of iodine is compromised by the ejection, as it were, of the iodine by fluorine. To condemn an entire population, already having marginal levels of iodine, to inevitable progressive failure of their thyroid system by fluoridating the water, borders on criminal lunacy.

    

2. I would like to place a scenario in front of those who favour fluoridation. A new pill is marketed. Some trials, not all together satisfactory, nevertheless show a striking improvement in dental caries. Unfortunately, it has been found to be thyrotoxic, mutagenic, immunosuppressive, cause arthritis and infertility in comparatively small doses over a relatively short period of time.

   Fluoridation of a nation's water supply will do little for dental health; but will have catastrophic affects on general health. We cannot, must not, dare not, subject nations to this appalling risk.

   
   The legislation for the UK is at the moment being hammered through the House of Commons and we here greatly fear that fluoridation of our water supply will be made law by decree. So we continue to fight tooth and claw. If the measure is passed through the House of Commons, a number of MPs have announced they will take the government to court. So there is hope yet...
